Battle of the Mascaras – I Need YOUR Help!

Hi beautiful readers!

I’ve been wanting to do this for a while, and I think now is the perfect time to try my experiment since I am prepping for a big dance concert. I am going to have a mascara battle royale – or a mascara battle – to see which drug store waterproof mascara is the best mascara to wear to rehearsal and the gym!

I am always looking for a good mascara to wear when I workout because I don’t wear a lot of makeup when I am training, and mascara is usually the only beauty product I apply before a good sweat. A few weeks ago on my Facebook page I asked my followers what mascara they believed was the best mascara to workout in! I only received a few comments – one of which mentioned the Maybelline Lash Stiletto Waterproof formula. I myself am partial to the L’Oreal Voluminous Original Waterproof Mascara.

Nonetheless, I need you all to comment your favorite drugstore mascara you like to wear to the gym or to rehearsal – anywhere you sweat a lot – so I can choose which mascaras are going to battle! There will be a few criteria I will base my judgements on!

  1. Application/Formula – How does the mascara apply? How mant coats do I need to get my desired length/volume/etc.? How does it smell? Is the formula wet, dry, clumpy, smooth, etc.?
  2. Wearability – How does the mascara hold up through my workout? Does it smear or smudge? Flakes? Does it drip into my eyes and burn them while I sweat?
  3. Removal – How easily does the formula remove with vaseline? Is it gentle on my lashes when removing? Is there residue left behind on my lashes at the base or tip?

Using these three criteria as my grading rubric, I will choose between 3-5 different mascaras to test out! This not only will give me the chance to wear them during different dance and fitness classes, but it will also encourage me to get my ass in the gym more often to test the different formulas!

Please feel free to leave comments below! I really want to know your favorites!

Thank you for all of your help in advance!

Fun Target Buys!

Hi beauties!

After I wrote an excruciatingly long paper today for my women studies class, I took a trip to Target to pick up a few food items for the week. About two weeks ago, I went to Target to buy travel-sized toiletries for my trip down to see my boyfriend, and upon checkout, I received a manufacturer’s coupon for a free Revlon mascara! I was so excited I could hardly contain myself (yes this is something silly to be excited for, but hey, if it’s free it’s for me!). So this trip wasn’t just to go buy some snacks for in-between dance classes, it was also to pick up my free mascara.

Revlon Ultimate All-in-One mascara

This coupon wasn’t just for any Revlon mascara though, don’t be mistaken! It was for their new and improved mascara line that just dropped a few weeks ago! Revlon’s new mascara line doesn’t have a formal name, but they are distinguishable by their packaging. Each mascara looks similar in packaging, except the caps of each mascara is a different color. My coupon was for their Ultimate All-in-One mascara (the one with the red cap), and these retail for $6.99! I am so excited to try it out!

Additionally, while I was visiting my boyfriend, my tried and true Wet n’ Wild bronzer finally broke into a million useless and messy pieces. I haven’t been using bronzer when I do a full face of makeup, but it doesn’t look the same. I decided to try a new bronzer in cuter packaging that I’ve been waiting to get my hands on. Can you guess what brand it is?

e.l.f. bronzer in the shade “warm”

If you guessed e.l.f. you are one smart cookie and definitely know what brands I like!

This bronzer looks great, and I paid about $4.70 for this at Target. It came in the shades golden and warm, but I chose warm because it said the warm shades were better for contouring (they have a deeper tan color).

I am really excited to play with these fun new products, and I am hoping for good results from each. I know e.l.f. usually doesn’t disappoint, but I don’t ever use Revlon, so I am curious to see how this new and improved mascara works!

Benefit and Urban Decay

Hello everyone! I have a few fun mini products I received for Christmas I want to share with you today. 🙂 I received a sample-sized version of They’re Real! Mascara by Benefit cosmetics, a full-size lip gloss called Sugar Bomb from Benefit, and a miniature version of Perversion Mascara by Urban Decay! I’ve been using the mascaras, and I have yet to use the lip gloss (I’m not a very glossy kind of girl), but here is a quick review and some pictures!

Benefit mascara

I LOVE the They’re Real! mascara! I don’t want this sample to end! The formula for this mascara is super smooth and it coats my lashes evenly. It stays on my lashes great and lasts throughout the day! The wand has plastic bristles, and a rounded tip, which is perfect for reaching the hard-to-reach lashes like the very inner and outer corner lashes, and the bottom lashes. The only thing I think is good to know about this mascara is that you should use a good makeup remover wipe to remove the mascara before a shower. I made the mistake of not removing my mascara the other night when I showered, and the my wet lashes stuck together like glue. Overall, I love this mascara and will probably buy a full-sized version of it once this one runs out!

Sugar Bomb lip gloss

As I wrote earlier, I haven’t trip this lip gloss yet, but it the packaging is really cute. Also, this gloss smells delicious! I’ll keep you all updated on how well it works, and if I like it or not.

Urban Decay mascara

This mascara surprised me. I haven’t heard of this mascara from Urban Decay (probably because I don’t own anything from Urban Decay), and it works really well! The wand has a long and fiber bristled end (not plastic bristles), and the coverage is great! This lasts all day as well, and makes my lashes look very black (I love dark lashes). Again, I recommend using a strong makeup remover to remove this from your lashes because the formula is heavy, and only soap and water will make your lashes sticky and gluey.

Have a wonderful evening Leaps readers!

Voluminous Mascara and Sailor Moon Inspired Eyelashes

Hello Leaps readers, how are you doing this evening? I am doing quite well, however, I am a bit stressed out with my remaining finals and assignments that need to be accomplished by this Friday. But obviously, the smart thing to do is something completely unrelated to college course work, so I want to do a little comparison between my favorite drugstore mascaras for you all!

I love L’Oreal mascara, and my favorites include their Voluminous line. More specifically, I love the Voluminous Original, Voluminous Miss Manga, and the Voluminous Miss Manga Rock. I use each of these almost every day.

There are a few differences between these three mascaras, and they each apply a bit differently than their other Voluminous counterparts.

Miss Manga Rock, Voluminous Original, and Miss Manga

First of all, the Voluminous Original (non-waterproof) mascara is my go-to ultra-favorite drug store buy. Its $5.89 a tube, and the wand is bristled (made of fibers not plastic). The formula for this mascara is superior to other brands I’ve tried. It doesn’t flake, smudge, smear, or run! It stays looking fresh all day, and is super easy to remove with baby wipes, makeup remover pads, or even face wash. I purchase this mascara in “blackest black”, but they do sell it in “brown-black” and “black”. It adds volume just as the name suggests, and really makes my eyes pop! I’ve tried the waterproof version of this mascara and it’s alright, but waterproof mascara tends to hurt/burn my eyelids when applying it, so I use the Voluminous Original waterproof mascara sparingly.

When L’Oreal released Voluminous Miss Manga, I was so excited to purchase it! I’m not a manga reader (although I will admit I own and have read the first Sailor Moon manga… but it’s Sailor Moon and she was my childhood hero), but the commercial for this mascara and the colorful tube and fun shape of the tube really made me want to try it! (Watch the advertisement here: (Voluminous Miss Manga advertisement).

Usagi knows how I feel when my eyelashes are on point

Especially with my love for Voluminous Original, I knew this one had to be good. The wand is tapered and made of the fiber bristles (not the plastic ones), and the tube is the pink one featured in the photo above. I’ve had this tube for a while (it’s definitely time for a new one), so the picture doesn’t do it justice! This mascara lengthens, and definitely adds volume as the name suggests. And it lengthens my lashes so long, I’ve had multiple people over the years ask me if my lashes were fake, and of course I’d reply with a “no”. I’m proud of the work I put into my lashes! The length though, is what gives the mascara the name “Miss Manga” because manga characters tend to have over-exaggerated features, including larger eyes and longer lashes! This mascara has me wanting to fight evil by moonlight, and win love by daylight (Sailor Moon reference), and I can do all of this knowing my lashes look totally fierce (thank you L’Oreal <3). And what is super awesome, is this mascara stays in place, doesn’t smudge or smear, and is also easy to remove.

Finally, there is Voluminous Miss Manga Rock! When the commercial for this spinoff of the original Miss Manga came out this summer, I was totally into trying it out (Take a look at the commercial for Miss Manga Rock here Voluminous Miss Manga Rock advertisement). Then I realized it had a plastic bristled wand, and I really dislike plastic bristled wands, so I decided to not spend my money on it. I have found with other brands (like CoverGirl), plastic wands don’t lengthen or volumize my lashes. Nevertheless, the other day I wrote that I picked up a few things from Target, and this mascara happened to be on sale. I decided to try to waterproof version since my boyfriend was coming home for Thanksgiving (cue sobs of joy), so I needed something to sustain my waterworks. I have to say, I was pleasantly surprised with Voluminous Miss Manga Rock! This brand did not sting my lashes like the Voluminous Original waterproof formula did, it lengthens, AND adds tremendous volume! Especially on my lower lashes, this mascara deposits a perfect proportion of mascara, and it’s waterproof so I can exercise without worrying about my sweat smearing it, or my reunion tears ruining my eye makeup.  Additionally, as the commercial suggests, it does have a tendency to deposit the mascara on your lashes, forming them in the shape of “punky tips”. This is a cool look that I have yet to try, but usually when this happens I go back over my lashes with the wand and they separate. You can also separate the lashes by putting on another coat of mascara with a different wand if you don’t want the punky lash look. In general, this mascara is moon crystal power in a tube, and I’m sure Sailor Moon would recommend this mascara to look good while you go kick ass!

I would recommend these three mascaras to anyone looking to lengthen and add volume to their lashes. It is perfect for day or night looks, and if you’re like me and apply 489305 coats of mascara when you do your makeup, it is also cost-effective since it has a drug store price tag. I swear by these brands, and I hope if you haven’t tried these you go to the store and give it a go!

Have a wonderful evening everyone!
