May 2019 Life Update

WOW it’s been a minute since I posted on this account, and for that I am deeply apologetic. Life has been throwing me curve balls left and right, and I’ve been working and training a LOT in preparation for my summer.

Here are some of my recent activities, endeavors, and favorites for you all to see what I’ve been up to!

Orange Theory Fitness

A brand new Orange Theory Fitness opened very close to my home town. If you don’t know what Orange Theory is, it is a high intensity interval training (HIIT) fitness program. I’ve been curious about OTF for about a year now, and was SO SICK of my old gym membership. I have a membership at Crunch Fitness, and my schedule is so busy, I was barely using it. When I did go to the gym, I was so unmotivated to work out hard because it was late at night. I spend so much time preparing and teaching classes for clients and students, that the last thing I wanted to do at the end of the day was go to the gym and create an intense workout for myself to complete. In addition, the classes at my home gym are AWFUL.

For those reasons. I bought an OTF membership before they opened, and have been going for about a month now. I LOVE it. I plan on writing a whole post about Orange Theory and how I am running faster and rowing faster than I ever have before. This workout yields serious results. It’s fun, and because I spend a pretty penny on it, it forces me to go. I love working out in a group setting (that’s probably the dancer in me), so to be in a large group with everyone’s workout stats visible and updating in real time, it motivates me to work really hard. Another reason why I joined Orange Theory was to prepare my body for the intensity of my summer training. – see below for more on my summer dance training!

Pure Barre Training*

I am not sure if I mentioned this to you all, but the Xtend Barre I worked at closed very abruptly and permanently back in February. I was very upset because I just passed my test-out in October of 2018, and invested a lot of time and money into being a great barre instructor. I was reluctant, but a new owner bought our old space, and is turning it into a Pure Barre! He reached out to me, offered me a position, and I am being re-trained in Pure Barre method starting on Monday. I can’t wait! Pure Barre as a company has a much better corporate organization and structure, and the workout is very intense. It is also very different than Xtend Barre training. I miss teaching Xtend, but I am very excited for this new adventure.

*My opinion is not the opinion of Pure Barre, and does not reflect the opinions of the company. All opinions are my own*

Auditions

After a VERY stressful and somewhat awful audition back in April, I’ve been taking some time away from auditioning. I was auditioning at least once a week since January, and to be honest, I am feeling a bit burnt out. I don’t like when dance/performance becomes a source of an unhealthy amount of stress. That being said, I haven’t auditioned for anything in about a month. But in typical Julia fashion, I have an audition this Saturday evening for a company I am very interested in working with. I am looking forward to this audition because it is for concert, contemporary work instead of commercial work which is what I’ve been focusing on the last few months. Hopefully all goes well – I am looking forward to the opportunity.

Summer Dance Training

As you all know, I am attending Joffrey Ballet School in Genoa, Italy this summer, and the Peridance Capezio BLUEPRINT summer intensive in NYC. I’ve been working full-time between all of my jobs to save and pay for my trips! I am currently looking to book my flight to Italy, and then I am basically all set to go! I can’t believe I’m going to live in Italy for two weeks, and then hop right on a plane back to NYC to train with some amazing choreographers and perform in a show! I am looking forward to all of my experiences this summer!

I will hopefully have more time to post as the recital season draws near, and my studio teaching comes to a close for the summer. Life is really busy right now, but I am excited to see what is in store for the rest of 2019!

How are your 2019 goals coming along? What are you working towards, and what are you doing every day to bring you closer to those goals?

Pliè for Pink – Barre for a Cause

Salutations my pretties!

On October 27, my Xtend studio along with many other Xtend Barre studios participated in Pliè for Pink! Pliè for Pink is a series of donation fitness classes where members and community residents come in to workout for a cause! Even Xtenders with memberships paid the class registration fee on this day, and 100% of our proceeds went to Making Strides Against Breast Cancer – an organization dedicated to funding research for breast cancer treatment and cure! Together as a community, our studio raised over $1000.00!

I taught the last class of the day – a 75 minute Barre Bootcamp! This task was super daunting to me since I just passed my instructor test-out last month. I met with my trainer two weeks ago to create a workout for the barre camp, and for 36 hours leading up to the event, I was rehearsing and practicing my class non-stop. I really wanted it to be perfect, especially since this was my first Barre Camp as an official instructor.

Along with getting their workout in, participants received a free pair of pink Xtend Barre sticky socks for class, and could enjoy cryotherapy facials, and desserts from Splurge Bakery!

I don’t think the class could have run any more smoothly!! It went SO well, and I was very proud of myself for being able to lead my lovely clients through 75 minutes of non-stop burning, sculpting, and cardio! Being able to teach at an event like this for such an incredible cause was humbling. Many women in my life either had cancer, or have battled cancer in many forms, so to raise awareness and money for breast cancer research with a room full of strong women was empowering.

I can’t believe Xtend Barre fell into my life so perfectly, and is something I not only love to do, but also is something I’m good at doing. I never thought I could excel as a fitness instructor (being so immersed in my dance teacher ways), but Xtend Barre has truly helped me become a better instructor in all of my avenues of teaching – dance included!

As much as we love Halloween and anticipate the upcoming holiday season, October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, and it is important to come together as a community to give back.

Sending love and light your way today! Thanks for reading!

I am Officially an Xtend Barre Instructor!

HELLO EVERYONE!

If you recall, in the spring I wrote about my weekend training to become an Xtend Barre instructor, and how Xtend Barre has changed my body! Well as you also know, right after training I left for 6 weeks for the American Dance Festival, and when I returned home, I jumped right into studying and training for test-out for my Xtend Barre certification.

I am proud to finally say – I have officially passed my test-out and am now a fully certified Xtend Barre instructor!! This was months in the making, and I’ve wanted to dip into the fitness industry by teaching barre for many years. I’ve trained in all types of barre method classes for the past 5 years as an alternative to a regular workout regimen. My discovery of Xtend Barre was purely by chance, and a risk I knew would be worth the outcome. The opportunity came at a very significant time in my life as well, and I’m so grateful for it’s timing.

Xtend Barre is a safe, and effective workout I whole-heartedly believe in. Not only have I seen the results on myself, I’ve seen them on many clients at our studio. I am SO PUMPED to be able to continue my education and my skill-set by joining this team of amazing Xtend Barre instructors. There is still so much to learn and discover, and I am definitely on my way to becoming the best, strongest me I can be.

If you all also remember, this was part of my 2018 goals! It’s been on my goal list for three years now, so now that I can officially cross it off of my long-term goal list is such an accomplishment! Onward and upward!

If you ever have the opportunity, take an Xtend Barre class. No dance experience is necessary, and many clients have seen improved strength, agility, flexibility, and weight loss!

How have your 2018 goals been wrapping up? We still have 3 months left in 2018. Let’s keep kicking butt!

Xtend Barre Training

Hi everybody!

Sorry for the lack of posts lately! This past weekend I trained to become an Xtend Barre instructor in Brooklyn, New York! Xtend Barre is a really fast-paced high-energy workout that combines dance, Pilates, and weight training to help sculpt, shape, strengthen, and tone your body!

20180521_120028.jpg

This is really not just a workout for women either – men struggle through this class, even men who are strong or who are already professional dancers! At the training I attended, there was actually a male dancer from the Martha Graham dance company training with us, and he claims Xtend Barre is one of the most challenging workouts he has ever done. **If you don’t know Martha Graham’s technique, just know Graham dancers are 150% muscle, and if he says Xtend Barre is hard – believe it!**

I’ve been practicing and adding Xtend Barre consistently to my workout regimen for the last month and a half, and the results have been fast! My body is the most toned, strong, and lean it has ever been.  I’ve gained about 5 lbs of muscle within the last two months from switching up my workouts, and adding weight training (not including the weight sculpting you do in Xtend). I’m so excited to be on this journey to becoming an Xtend Barre Instructor. For the last part of the training, all that’s left to do is plan my test-out class, and film a test class for my trainer to review so I can officially start teaching!

My body never looked like this until I found Xtend Barre – and the toning and definition has been really fast!

I really enjoyed myself learning the Xtend Barre technique this weekend, pushing my body to new limits, and meeting new people. Our trainer was also amazing, and I am really fortunate I was able to train under her direction and knowledge.

There is so much to do, and only 17 days left until my first day of work at the American Dance Festival! I can’t believe everything is wrapping up and coming full-steam ahead so quickly! It is all so exciting and exhausting in the best possible way!

I will definitely keep you all updated on my Xtend training, and can’t wait to share this career expansion into the fitness industry with you!

Have you ever tried Xtend Barre? Let me know if you have, or if you include barre fitness training into your workout regimen. I’d love to know your thoughts on it!

My Top Ways to Stay in Shape For Summer

Good evening Leaps readers!

I hope you are all having as splendid a day as I’m having! Tonight I want to discuss all of my favorite ways to exercise. Summer is just around the corner, and although my swimsuits are high-waisted, I’m still hanging on to my New Year’s fitness goals (well, somewhat). I’ve been eating healthier and losing a little bit of weight, and so once summer hits, I want to create more muscle tone than I currently have. I will be reactivating my gym membership (since I can’t afford it while I am in school), and will continue eating as healthy as I can. Here are my top four ways I exercise during the summer time!

1. Traditional Gym Workout

r2i188ouuwfpi

I decided to start with this one because this is the most common for me in the summer. I will go to the gym and start with either a run on the treadmill, stairmaster climb, or elliptical session for 25 minutes. Then I dry my face off, wash my hands, and do either an arm circuit with free weights, a glute/body weight circuit, or do legs on the machines. I finish every workout with 10 minutes of abs and 20+ minutes of stretching! I switch which muscles/muscle groups I target every gym session so I’m toning and firming all parts of my body.

2. Yoga

With my gym membership comes unlimited fitness classes, so I try to make it to 2-3 yoga classes a week. I LOVE yoga. Not only is it a workout, but it’s good for centering and focusing one’s mind and thoughts. Furthermore, you are toning and creating long LEAN muscles. And nothing beats shavasana (“corpse pose”) at the end of class when you can lay there and meditate. Sometimes the instructors will even come around and massage your temples or shoulders while you meditate. Taking a yoga class is a win-win!

3. Barre Fitness

Another fitness class my gym offers, this class combines Pilates, yoga, and ballet techniques to create an integrated workout that also creates lean and long muscles and muscular definition. Unfortunately, the barre teacher at my gym is not the best, and I don’t really like the instructor, but it’s a good alternative to not being able to make it to a dance class (dance is expensive especially over the summer and I am on a tight budget!). If you’ve always wanted to try ballet, but don’t want to go to an open adult ballet class (that might be intimidating for people who have never danced before), barre fitness is a great way to combine basic ballet positions and movements into a full-body workout.

4. Hikes

tndoeoxft7yoe

I love hiking! There is something about being out in nature that is peaceful and fun! This summer, I want to go on more hikes since I wasn’t able to go as frequently last summer. Hikes help you explore new places while also exercising your whole body! Plus, you get to take in nature’s beauty and some amazing scenery!

Those are my top 4 ways I workout and will continue my fitness journey this summer!

Have you ever tried yoga or barre fitness? What’s your favorite way to workout? Post your favorite workouts in the comments so I can try something new this summer!

Have a great night!

xoxo
